“As I walk through the halls, I hear the sound of rolling dice, and cries of victory and defeat.”
Squire’s Log,
It's day two of our D&D in a Castle event and the excitement is still palpable. As I walk through the halls, I hear the sound of rolling dice, and cries of victory and defeat.
At the table of Mark Hulmes is a player who brought with him custom character cards representing each of the Dungeon Masters at the Castle, which he hoped to get signed as a gift to himself for his bucket-list birthday experience at the castle. One of our staff took it upon himself to fulfil this guest’s dream and snuck these cards to each DM and got them signed. Presenting these tokens back to this player was, I confide, one of the most poignant and inspiring moments of the event. Many tears were shed by all, and It warms my heart to have given this experience to one of our guests.

January 23-26, 2025 with Beth the Bard and Jayden King
Lake Sinclair, Georgia
I do not know from whence came the dwarves I found playing croquet on the lawn, but their screams of laughter were not the usual dwarven cries to which I am accustomed. On inquiring, I learned that due to weather conditions, archery could not proceed today, but somehow Dwarven Croquet could be trialled, and may be revisited at future Castles. I observed the dwarves, adorned with beards, using hammers like Mjolnir to propel inflated balls through hoops while riding dragons and unicorns. It was a sight to behold, and vastly entertaining.
I have also heard that one of our DMs, Dave Friant of Nerdarchy, intends on having his forearm covered in a tattoo of the D&D in a Castle shield. This is the greatest honour I could imagine, to be permanently commemorated in ink on the body of a participant. This will be the third D&D in a Castle tattoo that I know of, and which humbles us greatly.
As darkness fell, in the midst of dessert service, Beth the Bard and Jayden King collected all the players and talent around them in the ballroom to share DM tips and insights, on behalf of their TTRPG university. I delight in such generosity of heart, and sharing of experience amongst the Castle inhabitants.
I retire this night with much gratitude for this charmed life.
Yours Ever,
The Castle Squire
