Hardcore Mode: How This Non-Stop D&D Experience Was Born

In 2023, for the first time, D&D in a Castle introduced a new gaming mode that had been dreamt of for many years. 

“One thing Players kept saying is, can we have more D&D? We already offer 8 hours a day in the Campaigns, so this was going to be a lot of D&D.” says co-founder and CEO Tara Rout.

The mode was formalized as an upgrade at the November, 2023 D&D in a Castle event, and run by Mike Tinney, who has since overseen and helped to develop the format. The first Hardcore Mode Campaign spanned multiple generations, with Players playing the descendants of each other, and watching history unfold over the course of the 4 days.

“My goal in that first game was to test the limits of what D&D could be. We pushed 52 hours of gaming over 4 days of the event, and I don’t think anyone will forget our adventure in a hurry.” says Tinney. “Future Hardcore Mode games will probably still surpass the 36 hour minimum game time, but I think what we did was really the most extreme anyone could go.”

Since that initial game, at D&D in a Castle April 5-9, long-time D&D in a Castle DM Alcuin Gersh has delivered Hardcore Mode with “The Great Divide” in which guests played both sides of a civil war, facing off against their own characters in the final battle.

“You may think you have to be experienced at D&D to enjoy Hardcore Mode, but that’s just not how it is.” says Gersh. “It’s really for everyone, of every level. You don’t have to be good at D&D for this. You just have to love it and want a really enthralling game.”

And in the second Spring round, April 11-15, Tinney revised his Campaign and returned one more time in Spring of 2024 to run the format again  with “Heirs to the Throne” - a continuation of the kingdom the players in the initial Campaign had built and developed.  

D&D in a Castle works with Dungeon Masters from its roster who are excited to run this kind of intense game, for Players who want to push the boundaries of their D&D experience, who just want more D&D. James Introcaso will be running a sold-out Hardcore Mode July 14-18 at Mohican Castle, USA, where soon after he will be followed by Beth the Bard who will be running her award-winning mod “She is the Ancient” also as a sold-out Hardcore Mode Campaign August 11-15. In the following D&D in a Castle round, August 18-22, Dave Friant of Nerdarchy is running “Valhalla Awaits” - a post-death quest for redemption in which Players shall petition the Norse gods, and embark on a quest across the nine realms to demonstrate their valor and earn their place among the einherjar.

The Fall offers two more Hardcore Adventures, October 28 - November 1, and November 1-8. Our recently announced Spring rounds of D&D in a Castle will give guests the option for this ultimate gaming experience as well. 

The adventure begins even before you set foot in the Castle. Engage in collaborative game preparations with your Dungeon Master through our exclusive Digital Tavern weeks ahead of the event.
