What to Expect at Your First D&D in a Castle

What to Expect at Your First D&D in a Castle

You’ve seen the ads, maybe read the event description here on our website. You know it’s about playing Dungeons & Dragons in a castle, and you probably know it’s a four-day vacation where you play in an epic D&D campaign created and run by a professional Dungeon Master. You know it’s described as a “vacation beyond imagination.” But what you don’t know yet, what no ad or event page can tell you, is what it actually is and what it feels like to be there in person.

Day One: Arrival at the Castle

Your great adventure begins before you reach the castle.

Depending on your travel preferences, our team members meet you at a nearby train station or airport and guide you onto our courtesy shuttle bus for a short ride to the venue. It’s a little like the moment when your adventuring party starts its next quest, because you’re traveling with dozens of other guests, some of whom you’ll be rolling dice with very soon.

Everyone's excited and talking about their characters, eager to make that first initiative roll. By the time you first glimpse the castle towers in the distance, you already know the names of some people you know will become your new friends. There’s something special happening, a recognition that every other person here is also someone who loves D&D enough to have flown across an ocean or driven across a country to play it in a castle, together.

This short bus ride is the first sign that the next four days are going to be very different from your ordinary life.

Then you get your first view of the castle in the distance, its walls and towers rising above the tree line and over the surrounding countryside. Suddenly it’s not a gaming weekend at somebody’s house or even a rented cabin: this is different, and the excitement is something you can feel from the moment the bus turns into the castle courtyard. You’re going to play D&D here. You are going to sleep here, and share meals here with your adventuring party and your new friends.

Next, our charming and ever-stalwart Castle Squire greets you and introduces you to your Dungeon Master in a brief ceremony right outside the castle doors. Your luggage disappears, taken to your hotel rooms by the castle staff; you’ll find it waiting for you after you check in later.

But not yet, because now it’s time to roll some dice and begin what you came here for: the best D&D campaign you’ll play all year!

Day One: Prologue and Banquet

That’s right, your campaign begins almost immediately after you arrive. Your DM escorts you to a dedicated, private space in the castle where you’ll find a comfortable chairs arranged around a huge, professionally-decorated table complete with dice, notebooks, and other gifts…and the custom, color printed Hero Forge miniature of your character that you designed personally months ago, all waiting for you to enjoy them.

Your DM leads you through a few brief announcements and reminders, helps your fellow players all get to know one another a little better, and then it all begins for real with the first moments of play. This is the Prologue, the opening hours of the campaign, and it’s over too soon.

Then it’s time to check into your comfortable hotel room, unpack, relax a bit, and get ready to hang out with all the other guests before the evening banquet.

By the time you roll into bed at the end of Arrival Day, you’ve bonded with your party, met new friends, and embarked on a custom D&D campaign that will continue for the next three whole days. Sleep comes easily, but you’re already excited for tomorrow.

Gaming Days 1-3: The Campaign

Over the course of your D&D in a Castle visit, you will play more than 24 hours of Dungeons & Dragons guided, start to finish, by a world-class professional Dungeon Master running a campaign built specifically for this event. That’s more than many home tables play in six months. And you’re not playing an adventure book or module pulled off a shelf. Not a published campaign retrofitted for a long weekend, but a campaign crafted for the setting, format, and special enjoyment of a small group of players in a historic building, who are leaving the real world behind for a while and focusing only on the story they are weaving together.

All your game sessions happen in your dedicated game space. The castle's rooms, halls, grounds, and chambers are all part of the atmosphere in ways that no game store back room or dining room table can match. When your DM describes a stone corridor, there is a stone corridor outside the door. When the adventure calls for grand halls, hidden corners, and castle walls, inspiration is waiting just outside your game room.

Between sessions, the castle is yours. You can explore its passageways and wander its grounds. Sit in its tavern and talk with other guests about what just happened at the table (because something just happened at the table, and you need to talk about it!). That is another thing our event pages cannot prepare you for: how much you will want to share, discuss, replay, and process everything that occurs during the campaign. Your fellow players become collaborators in something that belongs to all of you, and the between-session hours and communal mealtimes are where those bonds form.

All meals are included, from breakfast to lunch to dinner, and through to the late-evening sweets prepared thoughtfully in the castle kitchens. Snacks and beverages are on hand in every gaming room, replenished constantly. You don’t need to worry about preparing food or any other normal life logistics, because our team and the castle staff are there to make sure that you are freed from as many distractions as possible so that you can enjoy the D&D campaign to the absolute fullest extent.

But not every hour is structured. You’ll have a few hours to yourself each day to enjoy as you choose, whether that’s playing in a one-shot run by special guest DMs, challenging the Squire to one of his legendary games of Tiamat Chess, exploring the grounds, or just hanging out with other guests in the castle tavern.

At the beginning of game day 3 the fear sets in. The inevitable reality that after today, your campaign will conclude and reality will step back into view and call you back to your daily life. Most players experience, and in some ways savor the fear, because it makes the last day and the conclusion of their campaign that much sweeter.

Departure Day: “It goes by so fast!”

“It goes by so fast!” is something most of our guests mention on Departure Day. It’s true. Seems like only yesterday you were rolling into the castle courtyard on a courtesy shuttle bus. Now that same bus is waiting to take you, after a hearty breakfast and making sure you have everyone’s contact information, back to the train station or airport.

Endings at D&D in a Castle tend to land hard, harder than you may expect, because you’ve spent four days investing in a story, in characters, and in the people sitting around the table with you hoping for that clutch nat 20 when you need it most. The campaign has concluded. A good DM knows how to close a campaign that honors all of this, and our DMs are very good DMs.

Then it’s time to leave, and nobody wants to go. Not because the logistics of departure are complicated, our team takes care of all that for you, but because life has changed. Things are different now. You played an entire campaign of D&D in one of its best formats: around a table, with your friends, without any unnecessary distractions or interruptions, in a place that makes the experience feel even more real. You ate well, slept in a castle, and made friends with people you might never have had the chance to meet any other way.

That’s what D&D in a Castle is actually like.

D&D in a Castle offers multiple events each year in both the UK and US. All our events are all-inclusive: meals, accommodation, and your campaign are covered. Explore our upcoming events and choose your epic adventure.
